Stellenbosch | Raithby | Somerset West
Raithby is a small village that falls under the Stellenbosch Local Municipality, with a population of approximately 1000. It is situated off Winery Road, on the Western side of the R44 that connects Stellenbosch and Somerset West.
Founded in 1844 by Rev. Barnabas Shaw, South Africa’s first Methodist missionary, Raithby Village was established as a settlement for emancipated slaves who cultivated crops, whilst their children received an education. The village was named after Raithby Hall in England following a donation from Mrs Brackenbury of Yorkshire, that helped establish the mission station.
Raithby is a rare and well-preserved example of a 19th century Cape mission settlement, holding high historical significance due to its association with the abolition of slavery and the history of emancipation at the Cape.
Raithby provided 800 emancipated slaves with the opportunity to work on surrounding farms whilst cultivating their own plots of land.
Strawberries & Viticulture:
This is a notable agricultural activity in the area, with numerous farms cultivating high-quality strawberries & producing wines that are enjoyed by locals and visitors from around the world.
Many of the local residents are grounded and reliant on these farming activities, at times spanning generations. This has resulted in a strong, close, family centered and respectful community.
